Tips and Techniques for Taking Closed Tray Implant Impressions

Taking a closed tray implant impression is an important process when working with your dental laboratory. Here are some key tips and tricks to ensure accurate and reliable impressions every time.

1. Cover the Screwdriver Access Hole

  • Prevents Material Flow: Covering the access hole with wax prevents impression material from entering. This ensures the coping fully seats in the impression.

  • Wax Removal: If wax remains in the impression, it can be easily removed with an explorer.

2. Use the Right Impression Tray

  • Single Arch Tray: Most impression copings are tall and extend past the occlusal table, so using a single arch tray as opposed to a triple tray guarantees full closure.

  • Vertical Stop: Closed tray impression copings rely on the tray for their vertical stop. A triple tray might tear through the material, compromising accuracy.

3. Choose the Correct Impression Material

  • Medium or Heavy Body: Use medium or heavy body impression material for implant impressions to maintain positional accuracy.

4. Avoid Re-Insertion

  • Do not re-insert the impression coping unless an implant replica is attached. Re-insertion may pose difficulties in removing the coping for the laboratory technician. Additionally, repeated insertion of the coping may lead to tearing of the impression, which can cause the coping to not sit properly.

These small changes can streamline processes between you and your laboratory technician. Ensure clean-cut impressions every time when using these tips and tricks for close tray implant impressions.
